Math 116 - Chapter 2 Study Guide
- Solve the equation if possible. Look at problems 2.1.15-29.
- Solve the formula for the indicated variable. Look at problems 2.1.31-34.
- Find an equation having the given solutions. Expand your answer (don't
leave it in factored form). Look at problems 2.4.109-116.
- Perform the indicated operations with complex numbers and simplify.
Write your answers in standard form. Look at problems 2.3.25-36, 2.3.47-65.
Five
parts.
- Solve the quadratic equation by factoring. Look at problems 2.4.5-13.
- Solve the quadratic equation by extraction of roots. Look at problems
2.4.15-21.
- Solve the quadratic equation by completing the square. Look at problems
2.4.23-29.
- Solve the quadratic equation by using the quadratic formula. Look at
problems 2.4.45-51.
- Find all solutions of the equation. Use any algebraic method, but show
work. Look at problems 2.4.61-75, 2.4.81-82. Three parts.
- Find all solutions of the equation. Use any algebraic method, but
show work. Look at problems 2.4.85-86.
- Solve the inequality and sketch on the real number line. Write your
answers in interval notation. Look at problems 2.5.29-36, 2.5.45-50. Two
parts.
- Use a graphing utility to approximate all solutions of the equation.
Remember that you're only looking for x-values here since the y-values
will be zero. Look at problems 2.2.35-45. Use the root or zero feature of
the calculator, do not use the arrow / zoom keys to approximate the intercept.
- Use a graphing utility to approximate any points of intersection of
the graphs of the equations. You need both the x-coordinate and the y-coordinate
on this problem. Look at problems 2.2.49-53. Use the intersect feature
of
the calculator, do not use the arrow / zoom keys to approximate the intersection
point.
- Graph the complex numbers on the complex plane. Look at problems
2.3.67-74.
Notes
- Show enough work on all problems to convince me you know what you're
doing.
- In problems 5-8, you are asked to solve a quadratic equation using a particular
method. Be sure you use that method.
- You should show work on all problems except the two that say to use the
graphing calculator. You may use the calculator to check yourself, but
show work.
- There is a take home portion of the exam. The answers to the take home
portion may be found in the lecture notes on the Internet. The take home
portion is
worth 22 points and is due the day of the exam.
