Parabola
Vertex
Focus
Equation of Directrix
Circle
Center
Radius
Diameter
Circumference
Area
Ellipse
Center
Foci
Vertices
Endpoints of Minor Axis
Area (check the inside back cover for the formula)
Hyperbola
Center
Foci
Vertices
Endpoints of Conjugate Axis
Equations of Asymptotes
  1. Write the equation in standard form of the ellipse shown and identify the information asked for above for an ellipse.
  2. Find the name of a mathematician who was either born or died on your birthday (excluding the year). Give your birthday, and a short biography of the mathematician.
Hint: In Netscape, type in the following in the Location: box at the top of the screen. http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Day_files/Day####.html
where #### is a 3 or 4 digit number corresponding to the month (1-12) and the day (01 - 31) you were born in. Notice the month may be one or two digits, but the day is always two digits (pad with a 0 if necessary). For example, someone born on January 4th, would put in Day104.html whereas someone born on October 4th would put in Day1004.html, and someone born on Christmas would put in Day1225.html.
Each problem is worth up to 5 points. The total points scored on the chapter 5 exam and this extra assignment will not exceed 100 points.
