Math 116 - Chapter 2 Study Guide
- Solve the equation if possible. Show work. Look at problems 2.1.37 - 2.1.53. Two parts.
- Solve the quadratic equation by factoring. Look at problems 2.4.5 - 2.4.11.
- Solve the quadratic equation by extraction of roots. Look at problems 2.4.13 - 2.4.15.
- Find all solutions of the equation. Use any algebraic method, but show work. Look at
problems 2.4.53 - 2.4.69, 2.4.75-2.4.85. Four parts. Be sure you understand how to factor an
expression containing rational exponents.
- Perform the indicated operation and simplify. Look at problems 2.3.31 - 2.3.39, 2.3.51 -
2.3.63, 2.3.67 - 2.3.73. Three parts.
- Solve the quadratic equation by completing the square. Look at problems 2.4.17 - 2.4.19.
- Solve the quadratic equation by using the quadratic formula. Look at problems 2.4.33 -
2.4.41.
- Solve the inequality and sketch on the real number line. Write your answers in interval
notation. Look at problems 2.5.31 - 2.5.39, 2.5.51 - 2.5.57, 2.5.63 - 2.5.65. Three parts.
- Use a graphing utility to approximate any solutions of the equation. Sketch an appropriate
graph. Remember that you're only looking for x-values here since the y-values will be zero.
Look at problems 2.2.33-2.2.43.
- Use a graphing utility to approximate any points of intersection of the graphs of the equations.
You need both the x-coordinate and the y-coordinate on this problem. Look at problems
2.2.47-2.2.59.
Notes:
- Show enough work on all problems to convince me you know what you're doing.
- Since problems 9 and 10 are to use a graphing utility, copy down the graph from the
calculator.
- The first eight problems are to be worked by hand and work shown, not using the graphing
utility, although a graphing utility can be used to check the results.
- All problems are directly from the odds in the textbook.
- There is a take home portion of the exam. The answers to the take home portion may be
found on the Internet. The take home portion is worth 15 points and is due the day of the
exam.
- There is a problem from section 2.6 is on the take home exam.
- The in-class portion is worth 85 points.
