Math 116: Study Guide - Chapter 8
- Identify the conic section or degenerate case. Choices are no graph, point, line, parallel lines,
intersecting lines, parabola, circle, ellipse, and hyperbola. Nine parts.
- Know the relationship between the distances between the focus and a point on a parabola and
the directrix and the same point.
- Know the relationship between the distances between the foci and a point on an ellipse.
- Know the relationship between the distances between the foci and a point on a hyperbola.
- Know the Pythagorean relationship for an ellipse.
- Know the Pythagorean relationship for a hyperbola.
- Match the term with the definition. Nine parts.
- Know the standard form for a parabola with vertex at (h,k).
- Know the standard form for an ellipse with vertex at (h,k).
- Know the standard form for a hyperbola with vertex at (h,k).
- Label the vertex, directrix, and focus of a parabola.
- Label the vertices, endpoints of the minor axis, and foci of an ellipse.
- Label the vertices, endpoints of the conjugate axis, and foci of a hyperbola.
- Sketch the graph of the parametric equations. Indicate the direction of increasing t.
- Eliminate the parameter and sketch the graph. Indicate the direction of increasing t. Two
parts.
- Sketch the graph of a conic section in standard form.
- Complete the square to put a conic into standard form and then sketch it.
- Write the equation of the conic section shown. Three parts; a parabola, ellipse, and hyperbola
(not necessarily in that order).
Notes:
- No problems are directly from the text that I know of. If they are, they are unintentional.
- Problems 1 and 7 are matching.
- Problems 2-6 and 8-10 are multiple choice.
- There is a take-home portion of the exam worth 20 points. It is due the class period after the
in-class exam.
- The in-class portion of the exam is worth 80 points.
