Math 170: Chapters 9 - 11 Study Guide




  1. Definitions. The definition is supplied, you give the term best defined. Look at the following definitions: (9) alternative hypothesis, critical region, degree of freedom, level of significance, non-critical region, null hypothesis, type I error, type II error; (10) dependent samples, independent variables; (11) coefficient of determination, correlation coefficient, dependent variable, independent variable, scatter plot. Seven parts.
  2. True or False. Look at the chapter 9, 10, and 11 tests in the book*. Eight parts.
  3. Classify each statement as independent or dependent samples. Three parts. Look at problem 10.34.
  4. Give the decision (reject the null or fail to reject the null) based on the critical value and test statistic (which are given). Also, identify the type of test (left, right, or two-tail) based on the critical value(s). Four parts.
  5. A confidence interval is given. Find the sample mean. For a hypothesis test with a complementary level of significance, give the decision.
  6. Describe the concepts of hypothesis testing. Know the fundamental assumption which is made when hypothesis testing is performed. Understand the rest of the process, including what "unusual" means and the role of the probability value. Reconstruct the table from the front right board regarding what is a correct decision and what is a type I or type II error. Finish the wording for each of the four possible conclusions (fill in the blank).
  7. Work a complete regression analysis problem. Look at problems 11.89 - 11.95*.
  8. Test a claim about a single population mean. Look at problems 9.14 - 9.20*.
  9. Test a claim about a single population mean. Look at problems 9.37 - 9.44*.
  10. Test a claim about a single population proportion. Look at problems 9.55 - 9.63*.
  11. Test a claim about the mean of two populations. Look at problems 10.22 - 10.31*.
  12. Test a claim about the mean of two populations. Look at problems 10.22 - 10.31*.
  13. Test a claim about the mean of two populations. Look at problems 10.35 - 10.43*.
  14. Test a claim about the mean of two populations.
